Sliding Phils try to rebound in second test vs. Braves

Baseball Betting Lines

09/26/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - While a postseason trip seems unlikely now for the Braves, they are trying to uphold a recent tradition of keeping the Phillies out of the playoffs as well. After taking the series opener, Atlanta continues a three-game set with Philadelphia tonight at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia is trying to return to the postseason for the first time since 1993 and entered play yesterday tied for San Diego atop the National League wild card.

However, Atlanta handed its NL East rivals a 10-6 defeat yesterday, dropping the Phillies a game back of the Padres, who defeated the Giants on Tuesday. The Phils remained two games back of first-place New York in the division standings, as the Mets lost to Washington.

Mark Teixeira and Chipper Jones both homered, while Edgar Renteria finished 2- for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Braves, who have won three straight and eight of nine to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Atlanta now trails the Mets by four games in the NL East, and the Padres by three for the wild card.

However, the Braves, who won 14 straight division crowns from 1991-2005 with the last 11 coming in the NL East, need a lot of help to reach the postseason.

Braves starter Chuck James gave up three hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings, fanning six and walking one. Jeff Bennett (2-0) got the win for holding the Phils to one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Jamie Moyer (13-12) was ripped for six runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking three. Geoff Geary came on for Moyer, and was rocked for three hits and two runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Jimmy Rollins, and Chase Utley all homered in vain for the Phillies, who have dropped two straight and fell into a tie with Colorado in the wild card picture.

The Phillies will send out Kyle Lohse to toe the rubber tonight. Lohse is 2-0 in 11 outings (10 starts) since joining Philadelphia prior to the trade deadline. His last win came on September 4 against Atlanta, as he gave up just two runs over 6 2/3 innings to improve to 1-1 with a 6.32 earned run average in three career starts versus the Braves.

The right-hander has gone winless in four appearances since. He was hammered for six runs in two innings against Washington on Thursday in a game the Phillies came back to win, giving Lohse a no-decision. He was then forced into relief duty on Sunday, tossing a perfect inning.

Tim Hudson will counter for Atlanta and is just 1-4 over his last six outings. That includes a loss to Milwaukee on Friday, as the right-hander gave up three runs on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings of a 4-1 setback. Hudson also struck out five while falling to 16-9 with a 3.34 ERA.

His lone no-decision over his last six outings came against the Phillies, when he allowed five runs and 11 hits over five innings on September 5. Lifetime, Hudson is 4-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 12 starts versus the Phillies.

The Braves hold a slim 9-7 edge over the Phillies in the 2007 season series, and have won five of seven in Philadelphia this season.

SPORTS BETTING

NFL Football Betting Online

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.

It is called the "pointspread."

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.

But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.

The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .

Football Betting Lines

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
