Pernice, Green share lead at Sony Open

Golf Betting Lines

01/16/2009 - Honolulu, HI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tom Pernice Jr. holed out for an eagle at the 18th on Friday to shoot a seven-under 63 and tie Nathan Green for the lead midway through the Sony Open.

Green posted a second consecutive four-under 66 for his piece of the second- round lead, as players battled wind and intermittent heavy rain at Waialae Country Club in the PGA Tour's first full-field event of the 2009 season.

The co-leaders stood at eight-under-par 132 for a one-shot advantage over first-round leader Shigeki Maruyama (68) and Brian Gay (67). Zach Johnson (65) and Webb Simpson (68) were another stroke behind at six-under 134.

Geoff Ogilvy, Boo Weekley, Charles Howell III, David Toms, Stewart Cink, Luke Donald, Adam Scott and defending champion K.J. Choi were among the other players within five shots of the co-leaders.

The wind blew and the rain came in bursts, but the conditions weren't as bad as the players were led to believe they would be. Winds of 50 mph were forecast, but never materialized.

"I think a lot of the guys were surprised," said Green, who dropped only one shot while making five birdies in an early threesome. "It didn't seem anywhere near as strong as they predicted."

Still, the conditions were less than ideal. But the players found relief in the course setup.

"They have the tees forward on a lot of holes. So as long as you get your tee shot in the fairway, you still have a few fair opportunities to make birdie," said Green.

Starting on No. 10 and playing in a tee time nearly four hours earlier than Pernice, Green had two birdies on his first nine holes. He reached eight-under for the first time with back-to-back birdies at the second and third -- his 11th and 12th holes.

But Green fell victim to a cloudburst that came when he was on the No. 5 tee. With the rain blowing straight into him, he hit a low hook that only stayed out of a hazard after it struck a tree.

Green walked off with a bogey there, but recovered the shot with a two-putt birdie at the par-five ninth.

"That's about the only time that I thought the conditions were really severe, which was definitely sort of a good surprise that it wasn't as sort of like that all day," said the 33-year-old Australian.

Pernice, who seemed to make every tough shot when he needed it, cruised to a bogey-free 63 that had the 49-year-old veteran deflecting talk of joining the Champions Tour at the end of the year.

His front nine was sparkling, with four birdies moving him from a tie for 24th place after the first round to a spot near the top of the leaderboard. He slowed down on the back, collecting five consecutive pars until a birdie at the 15th moved him within two shots of the lead.

Pernice then finished with his eagle at the 18th, spinning a pitching-wedge into the hole from 91 yards to join Green at eight-under.

"The finish was spectacular, and it's always a surprise you're thinking about not holing it from the fairway," said the two-time PGA Tour winner. "It was tough out there today ... Luckily I scraped it around when I needed to and didn't make any bogeys and just kind of hung in there."

The cut line fell at one-over 141, with 78 players moving on to the weekend.

Among the players who made the cut was Tadd Fujikawa, the young Hawaiian star who turned 18 last week. Fujikawa -- who became the youngest player in nearly 50 years to make a PGA Tour cut when he got to the weekend at last year's Sony Open -- shot a 69 and was at even-par 140.

Vaughn Taylor, Bubba Watson, Chris DiMarco, Davis Love III, Loren Roberts, Corey Pavin, Rich Beem, J.B. Holmes and Jeff Maggert all missed the cut.

Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament odds
As of February 9, MySportsbook.com has released its coveted 2007 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament betting odds. “March Madness betting ” only a month away, the top ranked Florida Gators are favorite at 7-2 to win it all. The defending champs have not disappointed at all this season and currently have a 22-2 record and are undefeated (9-0) in SEC play. The Gators’ thrive off of their extremely balanced, experienced and versatile attack. All five starters started in last seasons National Championship game. What is most impressive with this group is their balance; the five starters all average between 10.7 and 13.6 PPG. The Gators have been on an absolute roll having won 15 straight by an average of 16.4 PPG.

Right behind the Gators are the 5th ranked UNC Tar Heels at 9-2. The Heels (21-3, 7-2) are absolutely loaded with top notch talent and are as deep as any team in the country. A concern for the Tar Heels might be inexperience. Of their top four scorers/ minute earners, three are freshmen and the other is a sophomore. The rest of the regular season, the Tar Heels play only one team that is currently ranked (Duke). Their remaining opponents do combine for an impressive 107-58 record though.

Other teams that the MySportsbook.com members seem to believe will win it all include the west coasts’ top team #2 UCLA (6-1), #3 OSU behind man-child Greg Oden (8-1), and #4 Wisconsin (10-1) behind their defense which has given up 70+ points only three times all season.

Below is a list of some of the favorites to win the 2007 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship lines. For the full list of teams and March Madness odds be sure to log onto MySportsbook.com.
