03/02/2010 - Lubbock, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Settling into the Top-25 for the eighth consecutive week, the 21st-ranked Baylor Bears try to stretch their school- record run even further as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Big 12 Conference action tonight at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.
The Bears, who are playing their last road game of the regular season, closed out the month of February with back-to-back wins over Texas A&M (70-66) and Oklahoma (70-63). With a record of 22-6 overall, Baylor is 16 games over .500 for the first time since the 1947-48 campaign when the squad finished with a record of 24-8 overall.
The Bears entered the week tied with both Missouri and Texas A&M for third place in the Big 12 standings with a record of 9-5, trailing only Kansas and Kansas State.
As for the Red Raiders, they've now bowed in five consecutive outings and have not come out on the winning side since slipping by Oklahoma by a single points, 72-71, back on February 9th. The most recent outing for the group took place on Saturday as Tech suffered a double-overtime setback to Nebraska on the road, 83-79.
Texas Tech, at just 4-10 in conference, is tied with both Colorado and Oklahoma near the bottom of the Big 12 standings entering the week.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Tech owns a 74-45 edge. However, Baylor has won six of the last eight meetings and is trying to complete the season sweep of the Red Raiders for the second time in the last three seasons.
Ekpe Udoh again showed why he is one of the more menacing players in the Big 12 as he registered 20 points and seven blocked shots in Baylor's seven-point win against the Sooners on Saturday. With his defensive stand, Udoh set the Big 12 single-season record for blocks with a staggering 122. LaceDarius Dunn stepped up to record a team-best 20 points, hitting 5-of-9 shots behind the three-point line as he registered his 13th 20-point game of the campaign. One of four to have started all 28 games so far this season, Dunn paces the team in scoring with his 19.1 ppg, shooting 42.2 percent from three-point range as he now stands five shy of 100 triples on the season. Tweety Carter, who delivered 10 points on Saturday, is responsible for not only 15.7 ppg, but also 145 assists, against a mere 63 turnovers. Udoh averages a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per outing.
Nick Okorie scored a game-high 28 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots behind the three-point line, yet his efforts did little to change the outcome of the four-point, double-overtime loss to Nebraska over the weekend. Okorie added five steals in 41 minutes of action, while Brad Reese came off the bench to record 19 points before fouling out. John Roberson pitched in with 15 points and six assists before he too picked up his fifth personal for the group. Closing in on 1,000 minutes played on the season, Roberson leads the team in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (5.3 apg), and is also the most productive three-point shooter on the roster having converted 53 triples thus far. Mike Singletary accounts for 14.5 ppg and a team-best 6.7 rpg, and has combined with Roberson to knock down more than 250 attempts at the free-throw line.

The P
Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
