Jackson Emery finished with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, seven boards and five steals for the Cougars (26-3, 11-2 MWC), who have won four in a row and pulled to within a half-game of New Mexico for first place in the Mountain West Conference standings, setting up a critical showdown on Saturday against the Lobos.

D.J. Gay had 15 points and five assists for San Diego State (20-8, 9-5), which had won six of seven coming in. Chase Tapley and Malcolm Thomas both donated 13 points for the Aztecs, who have lost five straight in Provo.

The contest remained tight throughout most of the first half before a late surge saw the Cougars build a double-digit lead.

BYU ripped off 11 straight points after Thomas made two free throws to tie the game at 25 with just under four minutes remaining. Tapley beat the buzzer with a three from the right corner to trim the deficit to 36-28 at the break.

The Aztecs knotted the game at 44 on a Kelvin Davis three-pointer less than five minutes into the second half, but BYU responded with a 14-2 run to take control. Fredette sank a pair from the foul line to push the margin to 58-46.

A layup by SDSU's Tyrone Shelley closed the gap to 60-53 with about 9 1/2 minutes left. Fredette knocked down a trey four minutes later to extend the lead to 72-55.

BYU led comfortably the rest of the way.
